Mumbai: Union Minister Prakash Javadekar has defended the felling of trees for the construction of Mumbai Metro. Javadekar has said that trees were cut during the expansion of the metro in Delhi too. He said that if a tree was cut in Delhi, then we had planted 5 trees in return. He said that development and environment can be protected simultaneously.

Javadekar further said that the Environment Ministry used to be a roadblock ministry during the Congress time. It is our policy that we will develop the country by protecting the environment. It is worth mentioning that the process of cutting trees for the construction of metro carshed in 'Aarey Colony' has been fiercely opposed since Friday night. Police has registered an FIR against the protesters and arrested 29. In view of the protests, Section 144 has been imposed in Aarey Colony.

The uproar started at night, when the work of cutting trees started on the Mumbai metro site, then people protesting against the felling of trees gathered there. Protesters started shouting slogans against cutting trees. They also tried to enter the boundary where trees were being cut.
