The Central Government has approved its largest-ever hydropower project in the mountainous northeastern region  Dibang Multipurpose Project (MPP). A projected investment of Rs. 1600 crore has been approved for the project bordering China. The project will be developed by NHPC Limited.

The project will generate 11223MU of electricity, or 2880MW (12x240MW), in a year with a 90% reliability. When it is finished, the 278-meter-tall dam will be India's tallest. The Project is situated along the Dibang River in the Lower Dibang Valley Region of Arunachal Pradesh.

The project calls for the construction of a 6 No. horseshoe-shaped head race tunnels with lengths ranging from 300 to 600 m and 9 m diameter, an underground powerhouse, and 6 No. horseshoe-shaped tail race tunnels with lengths ranging from 320 to 470 m and 9 m in diameter, above the deepest foundation level. After the project is finished, the government of Arunachal Pradesh will get 1346.76 MU, or 12% of the total cost.

Free electricity and a contribution to the Local Area Development Fund will be provided to Arunachal Pradesh during the length of the project's 40-year lifespan, totaling Rs. 26785 crore.

With the exception of the clearance for the forest (Stage 2), all necessary statutory approvals have been granted, including TEC, clearance for the environment, clearance for the forest (Stage 1), and clearance for the defence.

Flood management is the main goal of the Dibang Multipurpose Project, which is planned to be a hydroelectric project based on storage. If the Dibang MPP is constructed, a sizable portion of the area downstream won't be inundated.
After the Brahmaputra Board's master plan for flood moderation of all rivers that contribute to the Brahmaputra is put into effect, one of which is the Dibang Multi Power Project, a sizable area of Assam will be shielded from flooding and help to mitigate the continuous damage caused by floods.

The Community and Social Development Plan will be funded with Rs. 241 crores, and some of the locals issues that came up during the open hearings will be addressed. It is further proposed to spend Rs. 327 lakhs on a plan to safeguard the local people's culture and identity.
