The CEO of the Toronto-based startup Cluep, Karan Walia, has overhauled the world of mobile advertising with his AI-powered algorithms. Cluep, which stands for Clues within people, harnesses AI to give brands the ability to serve ads based on how people feel and what they publicly share on social platforms.

While the idea was the holy grail of marketing, Karan faced challenges landing investors to help fund the development of the novel technology. “One of the many challenges we faced was not having any capital and resources to train our novel AI algorithm. We needed access to a lot of compute, i.e., computers and servers. So, we used to break into a lab at the university I went to and hacked into 24 computers in order to continue to train our algorithm on large numbers of data sets,” he recalls.

Karan, along with his brother Sobi Walia and programming whiz Anton Mamonov, took the company from an underfunded pipe dream to a global advertising platform. Unsurprisingly, brands were ecstatic by the Cluep platform. In September 2018, Karan sold Cluep for $53 million to Impact Group, a Boise, Idaho-based grocery sales and marketing agency.

However, in June 2021, Impact Group was sold to a much larger competitor called Acosta. Following the sale, CI Capital retained Impact’s Cluep business and now, Cluep operates independently and autonomously following Impact Group’s sale. Currently, all three Founders are still active with Karan as CEO in Cluep’s operations and global growth.

“Since our launch, we have been fortunate to cross many milestones like having run more than 4000 campaigns for over 1000 tier one brands like the NBA, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Ford, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Subway, Starbucks, McDonald’s, Adidas, Nike, Red Bull, Spotify, Microsoft and Amazon. We’ve found that connecting in a more respectful, compelling and emotional way leads to higher engagements, actions, conversions and more sustainable relationships,” Karan asserts.

Karan concludes by saying that it's a lot of fun and a huge honour to be able to help and work with such great brands. “At Cluep, we’re leveraging deep learning to disrupt the traditional model of advertising and how we think about targeting and connecting with people, it’s actually making it more human and emotional,” he signs off.
