Chaitra Navaratri or Vasanta Navaratri is an Indian Hindu festival celebrated annually during the Chaitra month in Hindu calendar which falls in March-April, according to the English calendar. 

This year the festival will be celebrated from March 18 to March 25. Here is a schedule for the nine days and the rituals to be followed for worshipping Goddess Durga on these days.

According to Hindu scriptures, it is advised to perform the puja early morning within the sixteen Ghatis of Sunrise. This time is considered auspicious and called Ghatasthapana Muhurt which is the time between sunrise and the first part of the day. 


Pratipada- Day 1 | March 18, 2018

Goddess Shailputri, an incarnation of Goddess Parvati is worshipped on the first day of Navratri. 
According to scriptures, Shailputri is considered as the daughter of Himalayas. 

It is believed that Shailputri governs the Moon and is worshipped to get rid of any ill-effects in horoscope caused by Moon.

Dwitiya- Day 2 | March 19, 2018

On the second day, another incarnation Goddess Bramhacharini is worshipped by the devotees who are considered the unmarried form of Goddess Parvati. 

Tritiya- Day 3 | March 20, 2018

Goddess Chandraghanta is worshipped on the third day of the festival. She is believed to be the married form of Goddess Parvati.

Chaturthi | March 21, 2018

The fourth day of the festival is marked with the worship of Goddess Kushmanda. According to legends, Goddess Parvati lived in the centre of the sun and this form is known as Kushmanda. 

Panchami | March 22, 2018

Goddess Skandmata is an incarnation of Lord Parvati after she became the mother of Lord Skanda, popularly known as Lord Kartikeya. In the icon, Goddess Skandmata is mounted on a lion with son Kartikeya in her lap.

Shashthi | March 23, 2018

On the sixth day of the festival, Goddess Parvati is worshipped in her form of Goddess Katyayani who battled demon Mahishasura and killed him. This is known as a ferocious form of Goddess Parvati.

Saptami | March 24, 2018

The seventh day of the festival is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Kalaratri, a form of Goddess Parvati when she removed her outer skin to kill demons named Shumbha and Nishumbha. 

Ashtami and Navami | March 25, 2018

Ashtami

Goddess Mahagauri is worshipped on the eighth day of the festival. Mahagauri is, as per Hindu mythologies, considered the young form of Goddess Shailputri who was extremely fair complexioned. 

Navami 

Goddess Siddhidatri is worshipped on the ninth and last day of the festival. The goddess symbolises perfection. She sits on a lotus in her icon.

The ninth day of Chaitra Navratri is also celebrated as Ram Navami.
