It is said that Goddess became darker due to penance and after marrying Lord Shiva, one day when Lord Shiva Parvati was sitting together, Lord Shiva jokingly told Parvati to say Kali. After this, Goddess Parvati was touched by Shiva and, leaving Kailash, she got back into doing penance. It is said that during this time, a hungry lion reached there with a desire to eat the goddess, but he sat silently after seeing the goddess absorbed in penance.

After that the lion started thinking about when the goddess woke up from austerity and she should make him her diet, but in the meantime many years passed but the lion stood in its place. It is said that after the penance of Goddess Parvati was completed, Lord Shiva appeared and gave the blessing of Mother Parvati to become Gauravarna. It is said that after all this, Goddess Parvati took a bath in the Ganges and from her body, a dark goddess appeared, who was called Kaushiki, and due to Gauravarna, she came to be called Goddess Parvati Gauri. After that Goddess Parvati made her vehicle to the lion who was sitting to eat them.
