KIEV: Ukraine's National Guard has announced that its divisions have arrived at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant (NPP) site and taken over security.

"On the Chernobyl NPP site, the main mission of the national guardsmen is to ensure the security and defence of its nuclear facilities, as well as the physical protection of radioactive material," the National Guard wrote on Facebook on Tuesday.

The Armed Forces of Ukraine will inspect the site's safety and transportation infrastructure, according to the statement. Report reads, Russian troops who had been in charge of the Chernobyl nuclear power station since February 24 withdrew on March 31.

On April 26, 1986, the Chernobyl nuclear power station, located 110 kilometres north of Kiev, experienced one of the worst nuclear disasters in human history.
