Chhath Puja, the biggest festival of Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh, is on November 20, but it has started today. It is said that Chhath Mata is the sister of Suryadev. Those who offer water to Chhath Mata's brother Sun on this date, their wishes are fulfilled by Chhath Mata. Chhath Mata is said to be the goddess protecting children. If their fast is observed then the child gets a long life. It is said in the Markandeya Purana that nature has divided itself into six parts. The sixth part of Prakriti is best known as the Goddess, who is the Manas daughter of Brahma. It is also believed that Katyayani, the sixth form of Goddess Durga, is the Chhath Maiya.
Chhath festival is celebrated twice a year. It is the first time this festival is celebrated in Chaitra and the second time this festival is celebrated in Kartik. The festival of Chhatra celebrated on Chaitra Shukla Paksha Shashthi is called Kartik Chhath and the festival which is celebrated on Kartik Shukla Paksha Shashthi.
