A young child, aged six, tumbled into a borewell in Rewa district, Madhya Pradesh, triggering a rescue operation. The incident took place in Manika village near the Uttar Pradesh border on Friday afternoon while the child was playing near the uncovered borewell. The child is currently trapped approximately 40 feet below the surface, as stated by Rewa collector Pratibha Pal.
Responding swiftly, the State Disaster Emergency Response Force (SDERF) initiated the rescue mission, with additional support summoned from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) stationed in Varanasi. Efforts are underway to supply oxygen to the child through a pipe, and a CCTV camera was deployed to monitor the situation. However, obstacles prevented the camera from reaching the child, according to Additional Superintendent of Police Anil Sonkar.
The borewell, estimated to be around 70 feet deep, necessitates the excavation of a parallel pit to facilitate the rescue operation.
This incident echoes a similar occurrence earlier this month in Karnataka's Vijayapura, where a two-year-old was successfully rescued from a borewell after nearly 20 hours of efforts involving a team of 32 members from various emergency services departments.
In a separate development, the Delhi Government has mandated the sealing of all inactive borewells following a tragic incident last month in Keshopur. A 30-year-old man lost his life after falling into a 40-foot-deep borewell at a Delhi Jal Board (DJB) sewage treatment facility. The extensive 14-hour rescue operation unfortunately ended with the man's demise, prompting the Delhi Police to launch an investigation and file an FIR against an unidentified individual linked to the incident.
