SANTIAGO – Chilean President Sebastian Pinera has accepted the resignation of Andres Allamand, the country's former Foreign Minister.

"President Sebastian Pinera expresses his gratitude to Andres Allamand for his service as president and wishes Carolina Valdivia success in her new role," the statement said.

According to media news reports, the president's office announced that Carolina Valdivia Torres, who was previously working as the undersecretary of foreign affairs, will be the next interim Foreign Minister.

Piera's Foreign Ministry had to report in the previous days that the foreign minister was taking advantage of his legal holiday between January 31 and February 14, for which he was subrogated in his functions by Undersecretary Rodrigo Yáez, following criticism from the Chilean opposition, which requested a pronouncement from the Comptroller's Office and is even evaluating a constitutional accusation against Allamand in Congress.

In the next weeks, Allamand will take over as Secretary General of the Ibero-American General Secretariat. Pinera's term will expire on March 11th.
