BEIJING: China said on Tuesday that it is "sorry" over Iran's decision to violate the border to collect enriched uranium. China has blamed the US for worsening the crisis in West Asia. Tensions between Iran and the U.S. have escalated since the U.S. withered the nuclear deal last year and the U.S. has imposed punitive sanctions against Iran.

The U.S. has imposed sanctions saying that Iran is not doing enough to reduce uranium stocking. Iran has said it has started production of enriched uranium beyond the limits set under the 2015 nuclear deal. The nuclear deal is identified as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA). This was confirmed by the International Atomic Energy Agency, the UN's nuclear proliferation watchdog.

"China is deeply sorry for the measures being taken by Iran, but at the same time we have stressed on many occasions in the past that maximum pressure on the Us is the root cause of the current tension," Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Geng Shuang said at a briefing.
