Since India's application for NSG membership in May 2016, China has been emphasizing that only countries that sign the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) should be allowed to enter the NSG. The NSG has 48 member countries. It regulates the international nuclear business. India and Pakistan have not signed the NPT. However, in 2016, Pakistan also applied for NSG membership after India applied for it.
