In a recent testimony before the US House Armed Services Committee, Admiral John Aquilino, head of the Indo-Pacific Command, issued a grave warning regarding China's escalating military and nuclear aspirations. Aquilino underscored Beijing's efforts to bolster its military and nuclear capabilities, reaching levels not seen since World War II, with indications pointing towards preparedness for a Taiwan invasion by 2027.

China's Military Expansion
Despite facing economic challenges, China has notably augmented its defense budget, now surpassing $223 billion, marking a 16% increase in recent years. Aquilino revealed that under his command over the past three years, the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has substantially reinforced its arsenal, acquiring more than 400 fighter aircraft, over 20 major warships, and doubling its inventory of ballistic and cruise missiles since 2020.

"The PLA appears poised to fulfill President Xi Jinping’s mandate to be ready for a potential Taiwan invasion by 2027," Aquilino cautioned. He cited PLA drills simulating various operations against Taiwan, including practicing encirclement tactics through maritime and air blockades.

Global Apprehensions and US Response
US lawmakers and officials have expressed mounting apprehensions regarding Xi Jinping's intentions towards Taiwan, particularly amidst his objective for China's military to attain "world-class" status by 2027. While the US intelligence community believes China is committed to reunifying Taiwan with the mainland, it prefers averting military confrontation.

Representative Mike Rogers, chair of the House Armed Services Committee, highlighted China's substantial military strides, such as the deployment of advanced systems like hypersonic weapons and fifth-generation fighters. He also noted China's collaboration with Russia, which has extended economic and security support, notably amidst the Ukraine crisis.

Taiwan's Vigilance and Global Preparedness
Taiwan has observed heightened Chinese military activity, with 32 Chinese military aircraft and five naval vessels operating near the island within a 24-hour span. Taiwan's armed forces remain vigilant, utilizing patrol aircraft, naval assets, and coastal missile systems in response.

In anticipation of potential conflicts between Taiwan and China, the US and its allies have been actively preparing. Taiwan, a self-governing island with direct presidential elections, remains a focal point of contention, as China asserts its claim over it as an integral part of its territory.
