A few days after India's foreign secretary Harsh Shringla returned from a trip to Kathmandu. Now, Defence Minister Wei Fenghe of China is preparing to send to India's eastern neighbour for a day-long visit on Sunday, in order to support bilateral ties between Beijing and Kathmandu.

The People's Liberation Army, Wei, a general also holds the title of state councillor in the Chinese Cabinet. The significance of Wei's visit is for the ties between India and Nepal. Their bond has further strained following Nepal's publishing of a new political map in May where it laid claim to the Indian territory of Kalapani. India eventually rejected the map, over which Shringla held several meetings to resolve the issue. Nevertheless, the claim of General MM Naravane may be acting on the behest of 'someone else' only worked to agitate sensitivities.

Beijing is in sought to take advantage of the tension between New Delhi and Kathmandu. It is worth noting that during the first quarter of the current fiscal, 90 per cent of Nepal's total foreign direct investment was committed by China. The PLA has also been providing financial support to the Nepali Army consistently since 2019.
