Chit fund fraud: Couple arrested in Bangalore

BANGALORE: The Central Crime Branch of the Avadi Police Commissionerate has detained a couple who reportedly cheated customers after collecting money from them, under a chit-fund scheme.

Police said,  S. Murugaiyan, age 68, of Pattabiram registered a complaint in 2015 with the then Greater Chennai City Police Commissioner alleging that the couple had cheated him, his son and many others after collecting money under the pretext of a chit-fund.

The complainant also alleged that P. Rubi alias Murugan and his wife Nirmala were staying in North Bazaar in Pattabiram for 20 years and has been successfully running a chit-fund scheme for 5 years. Murugaiyan and his son paid Rs. 15 lakh towards the chit scheme. After the maturity period, the couple were unable to return the amount whereby absconded from their home. He  also alleged that 20 others were also cheated by the couple.

Inspector V Balan of the CCB looked into the case, and the suspects namely P. Rubi alias Murugan, 52, and his wife Nirmala, 46 were apprehended in Bangalore's Jeevan Bima Nagar. According to police, they have been evading capture for the past seven years.
