Kolkata: CID has recovered radioactive metal californium worth Rs 4,250 crores at Kolkata airport. CID has arrested two people with expensive radioactive metal californium from the Kolkata airport area. Acting on the information of a reliable source, the CID has arrested them. The arrested accused are Shaileen Karmakar (41 years), son of Lieutenant Biswanath Karmakar of Anandnagar, a resident of Singur, Hooghly, while the second accused Asit Ghosh (49 years) is also a resident of Hooghly.
The CID recovered four pieces of ash-colored stones, weighing about 250.5 grams, from them. Those stones were glowing in the dark and light was reflecting from those stones. Looking at the stones, it seemed that it was full of minerals. During a preliminary investigation, it turns out that the confiscated items may be californium, which according to an internet source, it's a radioactive metal. The price of Californium is Rs 17 crore per gram according to Indian currency.
Let us tell you that the common man is not allowed to buy and sell radioactive metal californium in the country. These extremely expensive radioactive substances can only be sold by licensees. Californium is available in the country only from Bhabha Atomic Research Center in Mumbai. The radioactive metal californium is synthetic. Its color is similar to silver. Californium is soft like soap, which can be cut into pieces with the help of a blade. The rarity of californium can be estimated from the fact that its production in the whole world is only half a gram per year. Perhaps this is the reason that the cost of one gram of California is more than 17 crores.
