Citizenship Law: Relief from curfew in Northeast, violence continues in Kerala-Bengal

The protests over the Northeast Citizenship Amendment Act in India are now looking a bit quieter, where the curfew was relaxed on Tuesday and vehicles were seen running on the roads as usual. But protests continued in West Bengal for the fifth day, stopping road and rail traffic. In Kerala too, 30 organizations protested and stoned roadways buses and broke their glass. The police have detained 233 people.

Shops and business establishments were seen open after curfew was relaxed in Assam's capital Guwahati. Vehicles continued to run on the roads too. The curfew was relaxed for 14 hours in the state's Dibrugarh district from 6 am. However, mobile internet services are still running in various parts of the state. In Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, no incidents of violence were reported when the curfew was relaxed for 13 hours.

Tensions over the Citizenship Amendment Act are at a peak in West Bengal. On Tuesday, protesters shouted slogans on the streets in Basirhat area of North 24 Parganas district. In the last few days, 354 protesters have been taken into custody in the state. Railway officials say that many trains in North Bengal are running late or have to be canceled altogether. Internet services are still closed in Malda, Uttar Dinajpur, Murshidabad, Howrah and North, and South 24 Parganas districts of the state. The state government has also postponed the program of the National Census Register.
