Guwahati: Supreme Court Chief Justice (CJI) DY Chandrachud says that judges should be social. He said that it is necessary that the judges be connected to society. When this happens, the judgements they give are much more meaningful. The CJI said that when principles are not applied in the law, it is clearly reflected in the decisions. The CJI said that all of us judges and lawyers are just like ordinary citizens of this country. The Constitution shows us the right path.

The Chief Justice further said that the provisions made in the Constitution on issues like freedom and equality bind our country in one thread. He said that the kind of work done by the Gauhati High Court even during the dark period of emergency (declared by Indira Gandhi) was commendable. The CJI said that those times were such that tough judges also had to face tough things. However, the judges did not make any compromises to keep the law alive.

Speaking at the Platinum Jubilee celebrations of the Gauhati High Court, CJI Chandrachud recalled the moment President Draupadi Murmu showed the way to the judiciary on the last Constitution Day. President Murmu had said that providing justice to the weakest section of society should be our priority. But this is not happening. The CJI said that after listening to his words, we were shown the way, and a lot of work was done in this direction.
