Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has told the Bombay High Court last Monday that SSC (Class 10) and HSC (Class XII) examinations cannot be compared as the subsequent examination sits more important for students as it proves to be a milestone for their careers. In fact, in an affidavit, the State Government has said, "The SSC (Class 10) examination for this year was cancelled after considering the safety of students, teachers, parents and other stakeholders".

Let us also tell all of you that the affidavit by Rajendra Pawar, Deputy Secretary, Department of School Education and Sports, State was filed in response to a PIL filed by Prof. Dhananjay Kulkarni challenging the State Government's April 19 decision to cancel the Class X examination this year. All of you must be aware that on May 20, the High Court had severely reprimanded the State Government saying that it was making fun of the education system and directed it to file its affidavit on the petition. Not only that, the High Court had also sought an explanation as to why the State Government was conducting class XII examination. The state government's affidavit recently said that class XII examinations have been postponed at present and a final decision on the same will be taken after the Centre takes steps at the national level.

The affidavit also says, "It was considered appropriate that the 12th board examinations were a more important milestone in the education of students as their future depends on them as compared to the class 10 examination". The affidavit said, "Usually, unlike class 10, the overall career path of students after class 12 is decided. Students in class 12 are more mature, independent, socially aware and physically and mentally fit than in class 10". At the same time, the state government said in an affidavit that it is like comparing apples to cheese as both are edible.
