Glasgow: A group of experts from the World Bank Group and the University of Birmingham has developed a roadmap to drive cooling innovations that could help avoid climate catastrophe, as rising global demand for cooling further raises global temperatures.

Their plan, dubbed "Cold Road to Paris," calls on governments, industry, and the international community to coordinate and implement a strategy to eliminate greenhouse gas emissions from cooling by 2050 while also providing the cooling services required to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

While more than 13 new cooling devices are deployed every second, the world is falling short of the 2015 Paris Agreement's goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, making cooling and refrigeration the world's fastest-growing source of greenhouse gas emissions. The world is also falling short of meeting the UN's Sustainable Development Goals and adapting to rapidly rising temperatures as a result of climate change. The report, which was released just in time for COP26, calls for major changes. It sheds light on the link between cooling and previously agreed-upon climate and development targets.
