Heavy Rainfall Alert: What Coastal Andhra and Yanam Can Expect This Sunday

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an alert for extremely heavy rainfall in Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam for Sunday, September 8. The warning is prompted by a cyclonic circulation that is strengthening into a depression over the Bay of Bengal.

According to the IMD, "A well-marked low-pressure area is present over the northwest and adjacent central Bay of Bengal as of 0830 hrs IST today. It is expected to move northwards and intensify into a Depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal off the North Odisha-West Bengal coasts on September 8. Subsequently, it is anticipated to track west-northwestwards across Gangetic West Bengal, north Odisha, Jharkhand, and adjacent north Chhattisgarh over the next three days."

The department also noted that this low-pressure system will lead to increased rainfall over Odisha, Coastal Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana from September 7 to 10, 2024.

In West and Central India, the IMD forecasts widespread light to moderate rainfall. Scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall is expected over Central India throughout the week. Isolated very heavy rainfall is likely in the ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra on September 8 and 9 and over Vidarbha on September 12. Additionally, isolated heavy rainfall is predicted for Madhya Pradesh over the next seven days.

For South Peninsular India, isolated extremely heavy rainfall is forecasted for Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam on September 8, with very heavy rainfall expected in the region and Telangana on September 8 and 9. Fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall is likely over Coastal Karnataka, Kerala, and Mahe. Scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall is anticipated over Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam, Telangana, Lakshadweep, with isolated to scattered rainfall over Rayalaseema, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, and interior Karnataka throughout the week.

In Northwest India, the IMD predicts scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall over the region over the next five days. Isolated heavy rainfall is expected in West Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and West Rajasthan on September 7 and 8, in Uttarakhand from September 9 to 11, and in East Uttar Pradesh on September 10 and 11. East Rajasthan may experience isolated heavy rainfall from September 7 to 9 and again on September 13.

In East and Northeast India, widespread light to moderate rainfall is expected over Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and the Andaman and Nicobar Islands during the next seven days. Isolated very heavy rainfall is likely over Odisha from September 8 to 10, Assam and Meghalaya from September 10 to 12, and Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura on September 10 and 11.
