NEW DELHI: Congress MPs staged a protest outside Parliament on Thursday against rising petrol costs and demanded its roll back.

"The Congress is protesting nationally against the fuel price hike and we demand a rollback," party head Rahul Gandhi said after the protest. "The government is filling its coffers while the poor man is suffering." A three-phase protest has been organised by the Congress. On Thursday, Congress leaders and workers will stage a protest outside their homes and public places by garlanding gas cylinders, scooters/bikes, empty petrol/diesel cans, etc, and posting these activities on various social media platforms, in order to draw the attention of the deaf BJP government to the inexorable rise in gas-petrol-diesel prices.

A circular issued by the party read: "The Modi govt has misled, tricked, and deceived the Indian people. After holding the prices of petrol, fuel, gas cylinders, piped natural gas (PNG), and compressed natural gas (CNG) steady for 137 days to ensure people's votes, the last week has been a nightmare for every household's budget." "On April 7, the party workers, frontal organisations, departments and cells, along with labour associations, unions, and civil society groups, will hold a similar 'Mehngai Mukt Bharat Dharna & March' at the state headquarters, organised by the Pradesh Congress Committees," the statement read.

The state-owned Oil Marketing Companies (OMC) raised petrol prices for the eighth time in ten days on Thursday.
