CHHATTISGARH:  To begin the 85th Congress plenary session, the party's steering committee will meet on February 24 in the capital of Chhattisgarh.

he crucial decision about the timing of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) elections will be taken at this meeting. Sonia, Rahul, and Priyanka Gandhi might not attend the meeting, in the meantime.

The presence of the Congress leadership at the plenary session will primarily support Mallikarjun Kharge's presidency and pave the way for the creation of a new working committee that will be led by him.

The party is expected to make significant decisions during the three-day meeting that will outline a detailed strategy for the Lok Sabha elections of 2024 and determine how to form electoral coalitions with opposition parties to take on the BJP.

The session, which is taking place against the backdrop of the Bharat Jodo Yatra, which has been hailed as a success by the party, is likely to draw over 15,000 participants.

The steering committee, which will serve as the working committee for the duration of the three-day meeting, will convene this morning at 10 AM to decide whether or not elections for the top decision-making body will take place.
The Congress general secretary in charge of communications, Jairam Ramesh,  was asked if elections for the Congress Working Committee seats would be held. "The steering committee will decide on it tomorrow. This matter will defenitely come up during the steering committee meeting… I can not say anything about it today," he said while adding that the steering committee would take the final call.

Starting today, February 24,, the 3-day conclave to be attended by around 15,000 delegates will see brainstorming over the new political debate of “opposition unity” to take on Bharatiya Janata party.

Although Nitish Kumar, the leader of the JD(U), recently raised eyebrows by publicly pleading with Congress to support his initiative to gather the opposition parties into a camp, a wary Congress has welcomed it in principle but made it clear that it is not willing to give up its leadership role in any opposition formation. Uncertainty has been brought about by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge's decision to emphasise the point to other parties.
