New Delhi: On Sunday, May 28, 2023, PM Narendra Modi is going to inaugurate the new building of Parliament. Sengol, the scepter of independent India, will also be installed in the new parliament. The very important Sengol, lost in history, came into limelight on 24 May 2023 when Union Home Minister Amit Shah informed about setting it up in the new Parliament. Sengol marks the transfer of power from the British to India's first PM Jawaharlal Nehru. But, now the Congress is calling the claims related to Sengol a lie.

Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh has claimed in a tweet that the new Parliament is being corrupted on the basis of knowledge received from WhatsApp University. BJP-RSS are distorting facts without evidence. Ramesh said it was true that Sengol was handed over to Nehru in August 1947, but there was no documentary evidence to prove it was a symbol of transfer of power. After which Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri tweeted that the Congress, which was the first to form the government in independent India and whose leader Pandit Nehru was handed over Sengol, has forgotten Sengol and the facts related to it today. Union Minister Hardeep Puri has shared an article of Time magazine in his tweet. This article was published on August 25, 1947. That is, 10 days after we got independence. There is a lot of information about the handing over of Sengol to Pandit Nehru on August 14.

At the beginning of this article, it has been told that 'Indians are expressing gratitude to their worshipers for the historic day (independence).' Special prayers are being held. Bhajans etc. are being heard. The article further states that Jawaharlal Nehru was busy in religious rituals before becoming the first PM of independent India. Two representatives of Chief Priest Shri Ambalwan Desigar from Tanjore in South India arrived in New Delhi. Mr. Ambalwan thought that Nehru, as the first Indian head of government of India, like the ancient Indian kings, should inherit the symbol of power from the holy Hindus. The article further states that the priest's representative was accompanied by nagaswaram players. This instrument is a typical Indian type of flute. Like the saints, both representatives of the priest had large hair and holy ashes on their heads and chests. On the evening of August 14, 1947, they slowly moved towards Nehru's house.

The Times magazine article said, "Nagaraswa continued to ring after the priests arrived at Nehru's house. They entered the house with full respect. Two young men were giving him air with a big fan. One of these monks was carrying a 5 feet long gold sword. Whose thickness was 2 inches. He sprinkled the holy water brought from Tanjore on Nehru and applied the holy bhasma on his forehead. After this, he offered the pitambar to Nehru and handed him the golden sceptre. He also gave Nehru cooked rice, which was offered to Lord Nataraja in south India in the wee hours and then brought to Delhi by plane."

The article also notes that after the ritual, Nehru and others arrived at the residence of Constituent Assembly President Rajendra Prasad. After returning, 4 banana plants were planted as pillars of the temporary temple. A roof of green leaves was erected over the holy fire and Brahmin priests joined in. The women sang hymns. Those who made the Constitution and were going to become ministers passed in front of the priest and holy water was sprinkled on them. After this, at 11 o'clock in the night, everyone gathered in the Constituent Assembly Hall. It was only after this that Nehru's famous speech 'When the world is sleeping in the middle of the night...' took place.

How did Sengol "disappear" since 1947?

Sengol was lost in the pages of history, the new generations did not know anything about it, even many Prime Ministers did not pay attention to it. PM Narendra Modi got the news of this from a video a few years ago. The video was shot by Vummidi Bangaru Jewellers (VBJ) on the 5-feet-long Sengol. Its managing director Amarendran Vummidy said that he himself did not know about Sengol. He saw a mention of it in a magazine in 2018 and when he searched for it, in 2019 he found it kept in a museum in Allahabad. In the museum, it was being depicted as Nehru's 'golden stick'.

Keep in mind that this symbol of transfer of power belongs to the period of the Chola dynasty. The Chola dynasty was the oldest and longest reigning dynasty of India, extending to today's Bangladesh, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore, Cambodia, Vietnam. This is the reason why, despite being the world's largest Muslim country, there are thousands of Hindu temples in Indonesia and there are also pictures of Shri Ganesh on the notes there,  people there believe that they have only changed their method of worship (religion), but their cultural roots are connected to India. Similarly, the king of Thailand is still called 'Ram'. At that time, the process of transfer of power was performed by giving 'Sengol' from one Chola king to another Chola king. It was, in a way, a symbol of justice in governance. Which has now been questioned by India's oldest political party.
