Kolkata: Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury launched a strong attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over her handling of the RG Kar Medical College rape-murder case, accusing her of attempting to distance herself from the investigation and of misleading efforts.

Chowdhury claimed that from the outset, there were attempts to mislead the investigation to shield the state government from blame. He expressed frustration over the lack of clarity on the case’s progress and criticized Banerjee for allegedly evading responsibility. “Since the beginning, there have been efforts to mislead the investigation to avoid state government accountability. We still do not know who the actual culprit is. When the CBI took over, Mamata Banerjee withdrew from her responsibilities. If she is committed, she should cooperate with the CBI and testify in court,” Chowdhury said.

In a related development, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh condemned the lack of effective action against crimes involving women in various states, including West Bengal. Singh remarked on the Modi government’s stringent stance on such crimes, but criticized several states for their inadequate efforts. He described the recent incident in Kolkata as both tragic and disgraceful.

The case involves the rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, discovered dead in a seminar hall on August 9. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has taken over the probe following a directive from the Calcutta High Court, has conducted additional polygraph tests on Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the college, and Sanjay Roy, one of the accused.

The Supreme Court has recently mandated that the security of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital be managed by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF). Additionally, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has suspended Sandip Ghosh’s membership pending the investigation's outcome.
