Former Meghalaya CM and senior Congress leader Mukul Sangma have made big statements about the NRC implemented in Assam. He said that women who were brought to Assam after getting married from other states were excluded from the NRC list. He has requested the Assam government to help women who are originally from Meghalaya but are married to residents of Assam and not named in the National Register of Citizens.

Former CM Sangma said during the discussion in the Legislative Assembly, "All the brides of other states (from National Register of Citizens) are out." Brides born in West Bengal, Nagaland, Bihar and Meghalaya are excluded from NRC. The Leader of the Opposition in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly said that the saddest aspect of it is that genuine Indian citizens have been excluded from it. He said that the phones of such victims keep coming to him constantly.

Meghalaya Chief Minister Konrad K Sangma said that he has spoken to his Assam counterpart about the women of Meghalaya married in Assam who are excluded from NRC. The National Public Register was last published on August 31, in which more than 19 lakh people have been eliminated. Former CM Sangma asked the government to be vigilant so that no foreigner can infiltrate the state. Illegal infiltration is the biggest problem of North-East states.
