New Delhi: The Congress on Wednesday brushed aside the statement of Shashi Tharoor on the suggestion to cancel the Republic Day celebrations this year, saying that when democratic institutions are being attacked, then why it is important to celebrate the occasion of democracy. Senior party leader Shashi Tharoor had cited British PM Boris Johnson's visit to India as saying that why not cancel this year's Republic Day celebrations in the event of not being the chief guest?

Tharoor tweeted on Tuesday night, writing, "Now that this month Boris Johnson's visit to India has been cancelled due to the second wave of Covid and we do not have a chief guest on Republic Day, so why we don't go a step ahead and cancel the celebration altogether? "Tharoor also said that this time it would be 'irresponsible' to call people for the parade. When asked about Tharoor's statement, Congress leader Alka Lamba said in the party's official press briefing, "As far as the party is concerned, it believes that whether it is Independence Day or Republic Day, both are our democratic and constitutional festivals. ''

Alka further said, "The way the Constitution and Constitutional institutions are constantly being attacked and weakened, Congress feels that in celebrating such celebrations with pomp. while relying on trust, we have to ensure this and take an oath that we will not allow our constitution and constitutional institutions to be weakened at all.
