NEW DELHI: The Congress has announced a one-month gag order on its leaders and spokespersons in the middle of a huge internal crisis following Rahul Gandhi's refusal to continue as its chief. The party has decided it will not be sending any representatives for television debates for a month.

Randeep Singh Surjewala, Congress communications in-charge, took to Twitter to announce the decision. He wrote, "Congress has decided to not send spokespersons on television debates for a month."

"All media channels/editors are requested to not place Congress representatives on their shows," he added.

The development comes as the Congress is dealing with a drubbing in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. With the party restricted to 52 seats in the lower house, questions have been raised about the effectiveness of the party's high command both internally and externally. The crisis in the Congress showed no signs of easing with Gandhi sticking to his decision to resign as party chief after its Lok Sabha poll debacle.

According to the sources, Rahul Gandhi is likely to continue as the Congress president for the next three to four months. This time limit has been set as Rahul Gandhi is adamant about resigning and has stuck to the decision being "non-negotiable".
