New Delhi: Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge has urged the judiciary to intervene and safeguard the multi-party system in India, asserting it as crucial for protecting the nation's democracy. Kharge criticized the central government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi following the alleged freezing of the Indian National Congress's bank accounts by the Income Tax department.

Kharge accused the Modi government of acting in a power-drunk manner by freezing the accounts of the country's largest opposition party just before the Lok Sabha elections, labeling it as a severe blow to India's democracy. He condemned what he termed as the unconstitutional accumulation of funds by the BJP for elections while the Congress's crowdfunding efforts were being obstructed. He vowed that the Congress party would not succumb to autocracy and pledged to take to the streets in protest against the government's actions. Kharge emphasized the importance of the judiciary in upholding the multi-party system and safeguarding democracy.

Former Congress Chief Rahul Gandhi echoed similar sentiments, assuring that the Congress party would continue its fight against the BJP-led government, emphasizing the party's commitment to the power of the people over the power of money. In a press conference, Congress general secretary Ajay Maken revealed that the party's accounts, along with those of the Youth Congress, had been frozen by the Income Tax department. He condemned this move as a freeze on democracy, highlighting a demand of Rs 210 crore raised by the department based on questionable grounds related to income tax returns from 2018-19.

Maken criticized the timing of the account freeze, just two weeks before the national elections, questioning the existence of democracy in the country under such circumstances. He called for a nationwide agitation against the issue, asserting the Congress's determination to restore democracy. Maken lamented what he saw as the absence of democracy in India, describing it as a single-party rule rather than a multi-party democracy. He reiterated the Congress's intention to mobilize protests across the country to reclaim democracy.
