Chandigarh: In the lead-up to the Haryana Assembly elections, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) has suspended rebel party leader Chitra Sarwara for six years due to her involvement in "anti-party activities." This action follows Sarwara's decision to run as an independent candidate from Ambala Cantonment, opposing the Congress-nominated candidate, Parvinder Pal Pari, who is contesting against six-time MLA and senior BJP leader Anil Vij.
The Congress party stated that Sarwara's candidacy as an independent violates the party's policies. An official statement from the AICC noted, "We have received multiple reports from Congress workers and candidates in Ambala Cantt regarding your involvement in activities contrary to the party's interests. Your participation as an independent candidate against the Congress candidate constitutes a violation of party policy." The AICC's review of evidence prompted the suspension, which officially bans Sarwara from party membership for six years due to her anti-party actions.
Voting for the 90-member Haryana legislative assembly is scheduled for October 5, with results to be counted on October 8, alongside those from Jammu and Kashmir. In the 2019 elections, the BJP emerged as the single-largest party with 40 seats, while the Congress secured 30 seats. To enhance voter turnout compared to the previous elections, Haryana Chief Electoral Officer Pankaj Agarwal announced that the Election Commission of India, along with local officials, is implementing special measures. Various SVEEP activities, including slogan writing, painting, street plays, and poster making, are being used to encourage voters to participate. Agarwal highlighted that Haryana voters are politically aware, with historically higher voting percentages in both Lok Sabha and Assembly elections compared to other states.
