Congress Urges Policy Overhaul in Puducherry, Demands NEET Exemption

The opposition Congress party in Puducherry has intensified its call for Chief Minister N Rangasamy to convene a special session of the territorial Assembly. Their primary demand is to pass a resolution exempting Puducherry from the NEET national entrance examination. This request was formalized through a joint memorandum signed by prominent party leaders, including Puducherry PCC president V Vaithilingam and Lok Sabha member V Vaithianathan.

The memorandum outlines several critical issues affecting the public. It stresses the importance of reopening fair price shops to ensure essential commodities are available at subsidized rates. The Congress also criticizes the government's policies such as prepaid power meters and the privatization of power distribution, which they argue lead to inflated tariffs and financial burdens on consumers.

Furthermore, the Congress party insists on the closure of liquor outlets near educational institutions and places of worship. They argue that such establishments threaten the cultural integrity of Puducherry and contribute to societal challenges like alcoholism among the youth. Instead, Congress proposes adopting culturally sensitive measures to promote local tourism.

Earlier, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK leader M K Stalin wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emphasizing the state's request for NEET exemption. In the letter, he highlighted that Tamil Nadu had unanimously passed a Bill in its legislative assembly. The Bill aims to exempt Tamil Nadu from NEET and instead use 12th standard marks for medical admissions.

Stalin mentioned that the Bill has been forwarded for Presidential assent, which is currently pending. He pointed out that recent irregularities during the NEET exam further justified Tamil Nadu's stance against the examination.
