Surat: Hazira Locals Express Concern Over Buffalo Deaths

In a concerning incident, 10 buffaloes in the Hazira area of Surat have been found dead. Local residents are pointing fingers at contaminated water believed to have leaked from the compound wall of the KRIBHCO (Krishak Bharati Cooperative) fertilizer complex. While officials are awaiting the forensic report to ascertain the cause of these deaths, the owner of the cattle is seeking compensation to address the substantial loss.

A Repeated Tragedy

This unfortunate event isn't the first of its kind. Approximately eight years ago, a similar incident occurred in the same vicinity when 15 buffaloes perished due to the consumption of contaminated water from the KRIBHCO complex.

Seeking Answers and Accountability

Dipak Patel, the President of Hazira Kantha Vistar Vikas Sahkari Mandali, has expressed deep concerns and called for a thorough investigation into the matter. Patel has reported the incident to the authorities, urging them to take decisive action.

Suspected Cause: Contaminated Water

Upon inspection of the deceased buffaloes, it was determined that they showed no signs of animal bites. The area where the bodies were discovered is flanked by the ONGC firm and the KRIBHCO compound. After a close examination of the compound walls of both firms, evidence of contaminated water leakages on the KRIBHCO compound wall was found, leading to strong suspicions that the buffaloes consumed this water, resulting in their deaths.

Action Taken

Dipak Patel promptly informed the District Collector, the Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB), and the Ichhapore Police about the tragic incident. Furthermore, officials have investigated the water leakage from the compound wall of the KRIBHCO complex.

Awaiting Forensic Reports

Jigna Oza, the Surat GPCB Regional Chairman, reported that their teams collected four samples from the area where waterlogging was observed near the KRIBHCO compound wall. While the exact cause of death remains uncertain, the authorities are eagerly awaiting reports from the Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) to shed light on the situation.

Veterinary Examination

Dr. Sujal Tejani from the state government's Veterinary Department disclosed that after examining the buffaloes, it was estimated that they had passed away approximately 36 hours prior. However, the exact cause of death remains a mystery. Viscera samples have been collected and sent to the FSL for comprehensive laboratory tests. The bodies of the buffaloes did not display any signs of illness.

Final Resting Place

Following a postmortem conducted by a team of government veterinary doctors, all 10 buffaloes were respectfully laid to rest along the banks of the Tapi River.

A Plea for Compensation

Dharmesh Rabari, the distraught owner of the buffaloes, has expressed his grief over the substantial losses incurred. Running an animal husbandry business in the Kawas village, he is now facing a significant financial setback. Rabari earnestly appeals to the government for compensation.

Seeking KRIBHCO's Response

Despite attempts to contact KRIBHCO for their perspective on the matter, the organization has yet to respond to messages and calls regarding the claims.

This incident raises questions about environmental safety and accountability, and it highlights the need for stringent measures to prevent such tragic occurrences in the future.
