Coronavirus infected patients are being treated nationwide. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has made it mandatory to label 'Covid-19 waste' on all types of biomedical waste generated during the treatment of infection. These guidelines have been issued under the Bio-Medical Waste (BMW) Management Rules 2016. Under the health infrastructure, the Center has considered it as a necessary service.

The concerned officials of Ministry of Health, World Health Organization (WHO) and Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) have prepared strict instructions on waste management of Covid-19. According to the guidelines, such waste will be easily identified by the label and it can be disposed of quickly.

According to this new order, all health workers engaged in isolation wards, quarantine centers, sample collection centers, laboratories, urban local bodies, general biomedical waste treatment and disposal facilities must comply with this guideline of Covid-19 waste management. Bio-medical waste originating from Covid-19 will be considered as hazardous waste. Health workers should wear a three-level mask with personal protective equipment, splash-proof aprons or gowns, nitrile gloves and safety goggles to dispose of such wastes. In addition to this, health workers should be given proper training in addition to sanitization and biomedical waste collection.
