Controversy Erupts as Video of Doctors Consuming Liquor in Bihar's Dry State Goes Viral

Patna: A video capturing doctors consuming alcohol in the dry state of Bihar has gone viral on various social media platforms, raising concerns and prompting Jan Adhikar Party (JAP) chief Pappu Yadav to share images of the incident on his social media account.

Pappu Yadav alleged that Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) had become a "hub for women, wine & dine," accusing it of violating the prohibition laws in Bihar. Yadav claimed to witness this during his own treatment at the hospital while in jail. He questioned whether there is a separate set of rules for the poor regarding liquor prohibition in Bihar compared to the DMCH principal and doctors. Pappu Yadav posted on social media, "Liquor was being served at the Pedicon conference in Darbhanga. The doctors were enjoying, the administration was sleeping, how long will this continue?? Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, please take cognizance."

The viral videos and photos depicted what seemed like a house party inside the guest house of Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital. The gathering was disrupted by someone entering with a camera. In the visuals, bottles of sealed imported liquor were seen on the floor after those present fled upon spotting the camera. Notably, the viral images included the principal of DMCH, Dr. KN Mishra. Darbhanga Police took action following the circulation of the video, conducting raids at DMCH and recovering three bottles of foreign-made liquor. The incident occurred during the ongoing Pedicon 2023, organized at DMCH from December 14 to December 17.

Confirming the authenticity of the viral visuals, Amit Kumar, Sub-Divisional Police Officer, Darbhanga, stated that raids were conducted, and the recovered evidence would be thoroughly examined. He mentioned, "It is claimed that a liquor party was organized on the DMCH campus. All video evidence will be examined, and people concerned questioned."

DMCH has been in the spotlight due to the controversy surrounding its autonomy, which became a point of contention between the state government and the Centre regarding the establishment of the proposed AIIMS in Darbhanga. Originally planned on the same campus as DMCH, the location of Darbhanga AIIMS was later shifted due to concerns about the autonomy of the existing medical college. However, a health ministry team in April deemed the relocated plot unsuitable for AIIMS construction, leaving the project in limbo.
