New Delhi: Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has been summoned by the MP-MLA Court in Sultanpur, Uttar Pradesh. He faces accusations in a case where he is alleged to have made certain remarks against Union Home Minister Amit Shah, as per a counsel involved in the matter.
Originally directed to appear on Saturday, Gandhi failed to comply with the court's order. The case, initiated on August 4, 2018, stems from a lawsuit filed by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Vijay Mishra. Mishra accused Gandhi of making objectionable remarks against Amit Shah. Santosh Pandey, Mishra's advocate, revealed that the MP-MLA court in Sultanpur had summoned Gandhi on December 16, but he did not appear as directed.
The complainant referred to Gandhi's comment stating that the BJP, which claims to believe in honest and clean politics, has a party president who is an "accused" in a murder case. At the time of Gandhi's remark, Amit Shah served as the BJP president. Pandey further disclosed that on November 18, Judge Yogesh Yadav, after hearing arguments, reserved the verdict and scheduled the next hearing for November 27. Gandhi was then summoned to appear on December 16. Vijay Mishra, a former chairman of a cooperative bank and resident of Hanumanganj, filed the case.
In a separate defamation case on July 6, 2019, Rahul Gandhi was granted bail by a Patna court. This case, filed by a BJP leader, originated from Gandhi's comments alleging, "all Modis are thieves."
