Bangalore: A court in Gokak, Karnataka has summoned the Chief Minister of the state BS Yeddyurappa in a case of violation of model code of conduct. The court has issued this summons for alleged violation of the code of conduct by CM Yeddyurappa during campaigning in the 2019 assembly by-elections.

The judicial magistrate first class court in its observation that CM Yeddyurappa in his statement urged a specific community and sought votes in favour of the candidate of Gokak constituency in the name of caste and community. On 23 November last year, Yeddyurappa, while addressing a rally in Gokak, had requested the Veerashaiva-Lingayat community not to split their votes and to vote for Ramesh Jarkiholi, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate.

Subsequently, both the Congress and the JDS had wrongly called for votes on the basis of caste and community, terming it a violation of the Model Code of Conduct of the Election Commission. The investigating officer, however, filed report B, meaning that the evidence is not sufficient to substantiate the allegations, urging the case to be dismissed. At present, there has been no response from the CM office in this matter.
