Varanasi: The court is scheduled to give its verdict today on the archaeological survey in the Kashi Vishwanath temple and Gyanvapi Masjid case. In today's hearing, it will be clear whether there will be an archaeological survey of the entire Gyanvapi Masjid area in December 2019 seeking an archaeological survey in the case, which has been going on since 1991 on behalf of the Wadi Kashi Vishwanath Temple Side. The court had earlier reserved the verdict after arguments between the two sides during the April 2 hearing.
It may be recalled that in December 2019, advocate Vijay Shankar Rastogi had filed an application in the civil judge's court on behalf of Swayambhu Jyotirlinga Lord Vishweshwara urging the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to conduct a survey of the entire Gyanvapi complex. They had filed a petition as a 'Vad Mitra' of Swayambhu Jyotirlinga Lord Vishweshwara.
Subsequently, in January 2020, the Anjuman Sanjharia Masjid Committee filed a protest demanding a survey of the Gyanvapi Masjid and the complex by ASI. The petition was first filed in the Varanasi Civil Court in 1991 by Swayambhu Jyotirlinga Bhagwan Vishweshwara for permission to worship in Gyanvapi.
Petitioner's claim:
The petitioner had claimed that the Kashi Vishwanath temple was built by Maharaja Vikramaditya about 2,050 years ago, but the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb destroyed the temple in 1664. It was claimed that its remains were used to build a mosque, known as the Gyanvapi Masjid built on temple land. The petitioner had urged the court to issue directions to remove the mosque from the temple land and return its possession to the temple trust.
