New Delhi: India has seen a rise in the number of cases of the death penalty to prisoners for some time now. According to a report, the number of death row prisoners in 2021 has reached 488, the highest in the last 17 years. That's 21 percent higher than the death penalty figures in 2020. The report said that the limited functioning of the courts due to the Corona epidemic has affected the priority given to the cases related to the death penalty and that is why it has seen an increase.
These figures of 'Death Penalty in India' are compared with the data of The Prison Statistics Report of India released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). The NCRB, in a survey, said that this is the highest number of death penalties since 2004. In 2004, 563 prisoners were sentenced to death. According to the report, while the trial court awarded a total of 144 death sentences in 2021, the high court has ruled on the death penalty in only 39 cases at the same time.
In addition, the high court ruled on 31 cases related to the death penalty in comparison to 2020. In 2019, the number was 76. The Supreme Court in September last year decided only six cases throughout the year even after listing the death penalty cases on priority. This figure was 11 in 2020 and 28 in 2019.
