NEW DELHI:  According to data from the union health ministry, India on Friday reported a slight decrease in new cases of COVID-19, with 3,611 new infections discovered in the previous 24 hours. Also down to 33,232 were active cases. The weekly positivity rate stayed at 2.88% while the daily positivity rate was 2.07%.

India has reported more than 44.9 million cases and 5,31,642 deaths connected to the pandemic in the last three years.

The number of active Covid cases is steadily declining across the nation, with Karnataka reporting 836 cases, Kerala 7872 cases, Maharashtra 2475 cases, Gujarat 750 cases, Delhi 1653 cases, Tamil Nadu 1870 active cases, Haryana 1945 cases, Chhattisgarh 1445 cases, Rajasthan 1797 cases, Uttar Pradesh 1889 cases, and West Bengal 2296 cases.

Health experts said hospitalizations are mostly taking place in cases where people are elderly and have comorbid conditions. They said,  the coronavirus variation XBB.1.16 is to blame for the present cases. However, the infection should be less severe and may not increase the hospitalisation rate because Indians have probably developed a hybrid immunity as a result of vaccination and unavoidable exposure to the illness. However, the Centre has urged people to finish their vaccinations and wear masks in crowded areas.

States and union territories must use a risk assessment-based strategy to stop and contain the virus, according to a directive from the health ministry. The ministry has urged state governments to assess the covid-19 situation at the local level (districts and sub-districts) and to keep their attention on putting the essential measures in place for timely and effective covid-19 management while also ensuring effective compliance.

6.587 persons have recovered from the virus in the last day, bringing the total recovery to 4.43 crore. At this time, the recovery rate is 98.74%. A day's worth of testing, or about 1,73,263, brought the total to 92.74 crore.

More than 220.66 crore vaccine doses have now been given to people nationwide as part of the COVID vaccination effort. Approximately 1,930 vaccine doses were given out in the previous 24 hours.
