First ever study by the scientists used satellite images to count the fresh graves and analyse the burial activity in Yemen which reveals the Yemen government might be under-reporting the novel coronavirus death toll of the country. The study launched by researchers at the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) analyses burial activities at all identifiable cemeteries in Yemen’s Aden region.

Between April and September an estimated 2,100 “excess deaths” were calculated by the team. "This total is best interpreted as the net sum of deaths due to COVID-19 infection and deaths indirectly attributable to the pandemic,” researchers said. Yemen report with its first case on April 10 and  recorded only 2,064 infections with 600 deaths for the disease till October 25. The five-year conflict that led to the crisis, overcrowding in cramped spaces, lack of health services and shrinking humanitarian aid experts says Yemen must be severely hit due to the above reason.

“By estimating excess mortality, we aimed to develop a more accurate estimate of the toll of COVID-19 in Yemen,” said Francesco Checchi, who co-led the study. Several media reported of increase in the number of fresh graves in the country, and the reporters observations in the ground hints the inequality in numbers.
