'Corona' hurts economy, unemployment rate rises to 23 percent

These figures are based on the weekly Trekker Survey of the Center for Monitoring Indian Economy. The latest data for the week ending April 5 has been released on Monday evening. The CMIE estimates that the unemployment rate has increased from 8.4 percent in the middle of March to 23 percent.

In his statement, former Chief Statistician of the country Pranab Sen has said that according to a rough calculation, around five crore people have lost their jobs within two weeks of lockdown. According to data from the Center for Monitoring Indian Economy, or CMIE, the unemployment rate in urban areas was 8.21 percent on March 15, 2020. It came in at 8.66 per cent on 22 March 2020. On 29 March 2020 it reached 30.01 per cent and then according to the data of 5 April 2020, it came to 30.93 percent.
