SEOUL, South Korea: According to officials, a total of 2,109 kids in Seoul tested positive for Covid-19 in the last week, before the partial reinstatement of remote classrooms to prevent illness spread.

As per reports from the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, elementary school virus cases in the capital increased to 1,248, followed by middle school and kindergarten viral cases at 406 and 169, respectively, from December 13 to Sunday.

In-class infections were reported at 24.6 percent, up 0.4 percentage point from the previous week. During that time, 206 school staff were infected with the virus, according to the office. On Monday, the capital's in-person school attendance percentage was 69.5 percent, down from 87.8 percent a week ago.

Schools in the greater Seoul area restored some e-learning classes Monday as part of the government's increased virus bans, as the country attempts to combat the recent surge in coronavirus infections, including cases of the novel Omicron variant.
