COVID-19 situation in most countries of EU are of serious concern, says ECDC

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has classified its 31 countries under stable, of concern, or of serious concern. The 31 countries that ECDC monitors includes EU, EEA member states and the UK.   The epidemiological situation monitoring necessitates the classification. Out of 31 countries only six nations were classified as stable and no country is in of concern label.

The wide countries are in epidemiological situation of serious concern due to the increasing rates and/or test positivity standing at above 3 per cent. The serious condition means there is a high risk to the general population, and for vulnerable individuals the COVID-19 epidemiological situation represents a very high risk, ECDC explained. The recent figures by ECDC says more than 5.5 million infections have been confirmed combined of the 31 countries since the beginning of the pandemic and the death toll now stands at nearly 206,000.

In the second wave that started rolling the continent in September, the Czech Republic and Belgium are more impacted. The COVID-19 incidence rates of the last 14-day is more than 1,000 cases per 100,000 population in both the mentioned countries. The Netherlands holds the third-highest rate with 616 cases per 100,000 population. The levels of hospital and ICU occupancy across the region is high. ECDC also warns of increase in mortality rate. ECDC called the authorities to insist people to follow recommendations, to avoid the bad impact on health, economy and the society. ECDC has advised the health care authorities to increase the hospital capacity and availability of the medical equipment and PPE kits. If the cases continues it warns of digital christmas this year.
