THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Given the uncertainties, the LDF-led Kerala government has been experiencing in the state for the past few months, the CPI-M making fun of Rahul Gandhi's "Bharat jodo yatra" is not a surprise.
Those who are familiar with the state's political climate might appreciate why the CPI-M launched its first attack on Gandhi by contrasting the lengths of his rallies in Kerala and Uttar Pradesh.
"The CPI-last M's bastion in the country is Kerala," a media critic said under the condition of anonymity. "There are reasons for the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan-led government to be jittery over the massive response this yatra has evoked, despite the fact that the party created history by retaining power in the April 2021 Assembly polls."
He continued by pointing out that even if there isn't an election coming up, the next one would be for the Lok Sabha in 2024, if the Congress is able to strengthen its party at the local level, it won't be good for Vijayan and his party.
Pinarayi Vijayan had a serious setback in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections as the UDF led by the Congress won 19 of the state's 20 seats.
Even though Vijayan's stance on the Sabarimala temple problem changed the situation in 2019, it was still difficult for him. However, the CPI-M has mocked the yatra because of the outrage it has sparked in just three days.
The CPI-M made fun of the Gandhi scion's lengthy yatra in Kerala and brief visit to Uttar Pradesh. The former Congress president is scheduled to remain in Kerala, which is governed by the LDF, till September 30.
The CPI-M also tweeted: "Bharat Jodo or seat Jodo, 18 days in Kerala and 2 days in UP... " in addition to Rahul's caricature. The yatra will have 118 permanent members and travel over 3,750 kilometres across 12 states, arriving at its destination in 150 days. It will crisscross the nation with 118 permanent members.
On September 11, it crossed the border into Kerala. It would travel 453 kilometres across 43 Assembly districts, 12 Lok Sabha districts, and in 19 days.
