New Delhi: The CRPF is considering the induction of women personnel in its specialized jungle warfare commando force CoBRA. The statement was confirmed by force chief AP Maheshwari.
Ten Commando Battalion for Resolute Action units were raised for undertaking intelligence-based jungle warfare operations with over 12,000 personnel under the CRPF in 2009. The force chief also said, "We are favorably considering inducting women in the CoBRA," during a press conference on Thursday. CoBRA are a specialized force that is specially raised for guerilla/jungle warfare type operations. They are for dealing with extremists and insurgents, etc and that's why are also known as 'Jungle Warriors'. These personnel are selected from amongst CRPF personnel and their hallmarks are courage, zeal, and patriotism. The majority of CoBRA teams are deployed in various Naxal violence affected states of India. A few of them are based in the northeastern states under counter-insurgency operations. Troops inducted into CoBRA units have to meet tough mental and physical parameters for their survival.
The Central Reserve Police Force, CRPF has had women personnel earlier in combat since 1986 when its first 'Mahila' battalion was raised. It has six such units at present. The force, with a strength of about 3.25 lakh personnel, is the country's largest paramilitary force and is designated as the lead internal security combat unit.
