Raipur: A CRPF jawan, who was on election duty, sustained injuries in an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast carried out by Naxals in Chhattisgarh's Sukma district on Tuesday, shortly after the commencement of polling in the state. Senior Sukma police officer Kiran Chavan informed media that the injured jawan belonged to the Cobra battalion and had been deployed for election duty.

The injured jawan has been identified as Shrikant, and he is currently in stable condition after receiving initial medical attention. The incident occurred while Cobra 206 and CRPF personnel from Camp Tondamarca were en route to Elmagunda village for an area domination operation. During their patrol, the jawan accidentally triggered an IED planted by Naxals, resulting in a leg injury.

Second IED Blast Incident:

This marks the second IED blast incident in Chhattisgarh within two days. On Monday, a Border Security Force (BSF) constable and two members of a polling team sustained injuries in a pressure IED blast in Kanker. The injured constable, identified as Prakash Chand, suffered leg injuries and was promptly taken to Chhotepethiya for medical treatment. Additionally, both polling officers sustained minor injuries in the IED blast.

Chhattisgarh is currently conducting voting in the first phase of polls, covering 20 constituencies, including the Naxal-affected Bastar division. To ensure a secure and smooth polling process, a three-layered security cover has been put in place for over 600 polling booths in sensitive areas across the 20 constituencies. The second phase of polling for the 90-member Chhattisgarh Assembly is scheduled for November 17, with vote counting taking place along with four other poll-bound states on December 3.
