On Friday, Japanese cryptocurrency exchange DMM Bitcoin revealed it had suffered a significant security breach, resulting in the theft of 4,502.9 bitcoins, valued at approximately $305 million. This hack ranks as the eighth largest crypto theft in history, according to crypto security firm Elliptic.

DMM Bitcoin detected an "unauthorized leak of Bitcoin (BTC) from our wallet" and is actively investigating the incident while implementing measures to prevent further losses. The exchange has also restricted the use of some services to enhance security, as detailed in an official blog post translated from Japanese.

Despite the breach, DMM Bitcoin assured its customers that their Bitcoin deposits are fully guaranteed. The company has pledged to replace the stolen amount with the support of its group companies to ensure no customer suffers a loss.

Requests for additional comments from DMM Bitcoin have not yet been answered.

Web3 security firm De.Fi reported that hackers stole approximately $2 billion in cryptocurrency through various cyberattacks and scams last year. Although this is a substantial figure, it marks the lowest annual total since 2020.
