Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are gearing up to assist Ruturaj Gaikwad in his new role as captain, succeeding the legendary Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Head coach Stephen Fleming revealed that senior players of the team will play a pivotal role in helping Gaikwad settle into his captaincy role during the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season.

The team, which has clinched the IPL title five times, kicks off their 2024 campaign against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. However, this season marks a significant change as Dhoni, who has long captained the team, has stepped down from leadership duties, sparking speculation about his future in the league.

Reflecting on the transition, Fleming highlighted the importance of readiness for Dhoni's departure, a lesson learned from past experiences. "A couple of years ago, we probably weren't prepared for Dhoni to step aside," Fleming told reporters. "But that situation prompted us to consider the possibility of his eventual departure."

Fleming emphasized Dhoni's involvement in grooming Gaikwad for the captaincy, noting that the decision came from the former Indian captain himself. Gaikwad, aged 27, will benefit from the guidance of experienced players like Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja as he navigates his new role.

"While there might be some trial and error as we adjust, Ruturaj is confident and well-respected among his teammates," Fleming stated. "His leadership style may not be the most vocal, but he has a solid rapport with the players."

The coach reiterated the team's commitment to supporting Gaikwad's development, highlighting the collective desire among senior players to aid in his transition into the captaincy.
