Beirut: Amid escalating clashes between rival armed groups in the restive province of Deir Ezzor, Kurdish-led authorities in Syria's northeast have instituted a curfew as a critical measure to restore calm and prevent further violence.

The curfew, which came into effect on Friday, encompasses a nightly window from 5:00 PM to 5:00 AM local time and applies universally to both civilians and vehicles within Deir Ezzor.

The recent bout of violence in Deir Ezzor was triggered on Tuesday when members of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) apprehended a local commander affiliated with the Faylaq al-Sham rebel group. The arrest set off a chain reaction of protests and confrontations between the two factions.

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) represents a US-backed Kurdish-led coalition that exercises control over a significant portion of northeastern Syria. In contrast, Faylaq al-Sham constitutes a Sunni Arab rebel faction firmly opposing the Syrian government.

The clashes in Deir Ezzor have exacted a heavy human toll, with a reported death toll of at least 12 individuals and dozens more left wounded. These confrontations have sent ripples of fear and instability throughout the region, prompting swift intervention by Kurdish-led authorities.

Kurdish-led authorities in Deir Ezzor have not only implemented the curfew but have also issued a heartfelt appeal for calm and restraint from all parties involved. Their objective is to de-escalate the situation and forestall the outbreak of a more extensive and potentially catastrophic conflict.

Deir Ezzor's current landscape is characterized by volatility and precariousness, and the potential for further deterioration looms large. In this context, the Kurdish-led authorities must navigate treacherous waters to defuse tensions, restore order, and prevent the escalation of hostilities.

The recent unrest in Deir Ezzor underscores the urgency of resolving inter-group conflicts and tensions within the region. Differing allegiances, political objectives, and historical grievances have contributed to the fragile equilibrium in this part of Syria.

Moving forward, there is a pressing need for diplomatic efforts, facilitated by all stakeholders, to foster dialogue, build trust, and seek common ground for the sake of enduring peace. Resolution of underlying grievances and the establishment of mechanisms for peaceful conflict resolution are vital steps in the journey toward stability.
