Between the Corona crisis and the lockdown, the Punjab government has made up its mind to open liquor shops in the state. In the midst of curfew imposed due to the Covid-19 crisis, the government had given permission to open shops of essential commodities. As a result, the revenue earned by the state government as excise duty was completely stalled.

The government is facing an acute shortage of revenue, has now decided to open liquor shops for a fixed time every day with instructions related to Covid-19, which will be announced soon.

A proposal in this regard has been sent by the department to the Chief Minister. The department wants that 66 percent of the contracts which have been renewed till 31 March, should be allowed to open. They should only be allowed to open for 5-6 hours a day and social distance should also be ensured. The government is losing about Rs 15 crore daily due to the closure of the liquor shops in the state.

During the last one month, the government has suffered a loss of about 450 crores. On the other hand, despite the prohibition order in the state, the process of selling liquor from below the shutter on contracts continued. In this way, where the liquor contractors are making huge money by selling liquor to the people at an expensive price, the earning of government has stopped.
