The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cyclone alert for the Bay of Bengal, with an intense cyclone expected to hit on May 23. Fishermen near the coasts of north Odisha and West Bengal have been advised to avoid venturing into the sea.

Sunanda, the Director of the IMD's Visakhapatnam Cyclone Warning Centre, emphasized the need for fishermen to return to shore by Thursday. She warned of potential very heavy rainfall and strong winds in the central Bay of Bengal.

A low-pressure area is predicted to form over the Southwest Bay of Bengal around May 22. This system is expected to move northeast and intensify into a depression by the morning of May 24.

"Heavy to very heavy rainfall and high winds are likely along the northern coast of Odisha and West Bengal. Fishermen are advised to stay out of the sea from May 23 to 24," Sunanda stated.

The cyclone is also predicted to affect Maharashtra and Gujarat between May 23 and May 27. The weather office forecasts heavy rain for Gujarat and Mumbai around May 28, 2024.

Light Rainfall Expected in Several States Until May 23
The IMD has forecast light rainfall in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, and other states until May 23. According to their latest bulletin, scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall with thunderstorms and lightning is expected.

Light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds are also predicted for Karnataka, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Lakshadweep, and Telangana until May 23.
